What are the criteria for a Work From Bermuda Certificate?
You must:
- be at least 18 years old and pay the application fee
- not have been convicted of a crime in Bermuda or elsewhere
- possess valid health insurance coverage
- demonstrate employment with a legitimate company or your own company registered and operating outside of Bermuda, in the case of a remote worker
- provide evidence of enrollment in a Research, Undergraduate, Graduate or Doctorate Programme, in the case of a student
- have substantial means and/or have a continuous source of annual income
If I am self-employed, is there the same requirement to demonstrate employment?
Yes. Providing appropriate documentation is required; this could include a simple letter outlining the details, a certificate of incorporation, or other appropriate documentation.
Once a completed application has been submitted, when should I expect to receive a response?
The turnaround time is five business days.
Do family members have to apply separately?
Yes, family members will need to apply separately and pay a separate fee. An income earner with dependents should submit one form for each family member. All related applications must be submitted on the same day.
Are certificate-holders’ children allowed to attend local schools?
Yes. They may attend public or private schools in Bermuda.
Will I need to pay income tax in Bermuda?
No. Remote workers and students are not employed in Bermuda so you will not pay income tax.
Is the Work From Bermuda 1 Yr Residential Certificate renewable?
Yes. It is renewable on a case-by-case basis. There is no guarantee of renewal and it is not automatic; a new application must be submitted. Those who require a period longer than 12 months must apply for a standard residential certificate.
